The 2026 cars are designed to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious relative to present-day cars.

Formula 1 has introduced the new language that will be used to describe the technical complexities of its revolutionary 2026 technical rules.

The sport is implementing what is arguably the biggest technical shift in its illustrious history next season, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the compulsory introduction of eco-friendly fuels.

The revised engines, which retain the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a substantially higher energy storage, driving significant developments in the cars' aerodynamics.

Over a race distance, drivers will carefully oversee ERS energy – potentially on hot laps – to achieve the optimal performance.

Wide-ranging research were conducted with a wide range of fans, including long-time followers and newcomers, to determine which terms would make things clearer of the main elements of the 2026 changes.

The stated goal was to present a range of advanced new areas of the racing as straightforward as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for specific components – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the adjustable aero – have been phased out in favour of descriptive names that succinctly convey the real-world effect of the technology.

Key Technical Innovations

Regulators explain that racers will have more power to make decisions regarding energy deployment, regeneration, and efficiency.

The upcoming changes introduce a range of settings that will be clearly indicated on TV overlays to aid the viewers' comprehension of the on-track action.

  • Passing Mode: This replaces the current DRS. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy deployable when a car is close behind the leading car to assist with an pass.
  • Extra Push Mode: This is a driver-operated battery discharge from the ERS that can be utilized during overtaking or defending. It delivers the driver peak output at the activation of a control.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be managed carefully, as the available electrical charge is strictly limited.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the nose and rear wings change configuration – opening on the straights for low aerodynamic resistance and top speed, and angling down in the bends for optimal cornering performance.
  • Recharge: Drivers can harvest energy with energy harvested under braking, or during partial power application at the straight's end or in sections where only limited engine output is applied.

Car Design Evolution

The next-generation machines will be more compact and lighter relative to current models, with a car length shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight decreased by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is projected to decrease by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although constructors will inevitably claw this back as they develop their cars.

Aerodynamic drag has been reduced by 40%. The cars will employ moveable wing elements – front and rear wings will adjust on the straight sections to improve speed and boost top speed and click back into place for optimal grip in corners.

Wheels will continue to use 18-inch wheel rims, but the tyres themselves will be slimmer, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and 30mm at the rear.

2026 Engine Regulations

The new power units will have an approximate 50-50 split in horsepower generated by the ICE and the electrical system, increasing from about one-fifth electric power under present rules.

The energy recovery system is streamlined through the deletion of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the sophisticated and pricey device that generated electricity from the exhaust turbo.

Every car on the grid will be mandated to operate on 100% sustainable fuel, produced using organic sources or synthetic industrial processes.
