The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
