While Swimmers Ran From Attack, Widely-Shared Photo Captures Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, views the iconic shoreline as her personal space. On that particular weekend evening, she, along with numerous local residents, noticed cracking sounds reverberating across the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Exiting her residence, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks on display made it clear trouble had occurred.

While standing on the road, conversing with a duo who had rushed up the hill in their swimwear, she noticed someone approaching behind her. The person was a lifeguard, running at full speed towards Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was the only one heading in the direction that the crowd was trying to get away from, carrying that sizeable pack and barefoot … He was sprinting into something that certainly every part of you would instruct you to run in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally maximum effort running.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery During Tragedy

The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous instances of courage in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, officers and medical teams caring for many the injured.

Local Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to come out of the local area, with the patrol base adjacent to the location of the attack serving as a makeshift treatment center. “Thank you all for your supportive messages and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the care for our responders,” the organization wrote. “When ready, we will share our stories in the aim that it supports those impacted.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many professional lifeguards, stated that the staff acted heroically from the instant the violence began right into late that evening.

“People have shared so many moving stories, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” said a council representative.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic shores safe for visitors, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be celebrated.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the atrocity of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is important that we consider just how much positivity we have witnessed in the presence of such darkness.”
